“To all who come to this happy place; welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past...and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts that have created America...with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” - Walt Disney

Windows

Look Up

Welcome to first of a multi-part post highlighting the windows of Main Street USA.  Not the windows of shops and stores.  Most of these windows are a little higher up, on the 2nd floor, and have some special meaning.  You have to look up when you walk down the street, and in many cases you need to stop and take a moment to see them.  Come along as we stroll down the street.

For many people entering into the park the first choice they have to make is which side of Town Square to enter from. If you enter through the east tunnel you will pass directly in front of the Disney Gallery and Opera House, but if you enter under the west tunnel then you will pass the tours garden and be directly in front of our first window, located at City Hall.

If you look at the upstairs window, just to the right of the porch you will find the window dedicated to the "Honorary Mayor" of Disneyland, Jack Lindquist. Jack is one of the Disney Legends, and was integral to the history of Disneyland.  From the Disney Legends site:

Jack Lindquist was hired by Walt Disney as Disneyland's first advertising manager, and eventually played a key role in making the Park a world-famous tourist attraction. From . marketing the original "E tickets" to lobbying for Disneyland's millennial expansion, Jack was involved in nearly every aspect of the theme park.

For a detailed bio click here

Now let's move down the west side of the street.

Between the Emporium and the Crystal Arcade sits one of the many facades along the street. Next time you pass by take a look up at the window.  The name my ring a few bells.  Elias Disney, husband of Flora and father of five children. Born in February of 1859, he would go on the have a varied career which including working in construction. Oh, and his youngest son went on to do some great things as well.

Walter Elias Disney paid tribute to his father in a very special way with this window on Main Street.  Having passed away in 1941, Elias never saw what would become The Happiest Place on Earth, but he would forever be a part of it with this window. For more history look here.

Continuing, between the Crystal Arcade and The Fortuosity Shop is out next stop.

The first of two windows here belongs to Wathel Rogers, imagineer and Disney Legend. Do you love the audio-animatronics that are all over Disneyland? Thank Mr. Rogers for his work each time you pass by the window. More here.

The next window belongs to another Disney Legend, Mary Ann Mang.  After writing to Walt Disney in 1960, asking for a job, she went on to become a vital part of the park and resort. More here.

And to finish this posting we look above the door to the Fortuosity Shop

This is a fairly non-descript window, with two names on it. C.V. Patterson & W.F.Allen. These two gentlemen were, respectively, Vice-President of Upjohn Pharmaceuticals and a pharmacist from Upjohn, who were instrumental in getting a pharmacy on Main Street. Nowadays if you want medical attention you can visit First Aid.

Next time we will continue down the west side of the street and look at more windows.

Looking Back

2012 Year in Review

As you prepare to ring in the new year of 2013, I invite you to take a look back with all of us at the year that was 2012.  These two excellent articles from Mice Chat will take you on a journey through both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure and all the things that happened in 2012.  It was a wonderful, crazy year after all...

For those who don't sleep in, be sure to get up early and watch the Rose Parade for Disney's entry into the parade.  It should be a lot of fun, as long as your not freezing your baubles off sitting out there on Colorado Bl.

A Very Merry DCA Christmas

A Very Merry DCA Christmas

As we slowly close the book on Halloween, let's look forward to the next major holiday at the Disneyland Resort.  Christmas has always been one of the biggest and most magical times at Disneyland park. Over the past decade millions of park quests have been able to experience the Christmas Parade, attractions like Small World Holiday or Haunted Mansion Holiday, Reindeer Roundup at Big Thunder Ranch and the very popular "snow" on Main Street.  Disneyland has always commanded huge crowds to celebrate Christmas.

But this year The Merriest Place on Earth may just be making a move across the plaza.

"This summer, the eagerly anticipated additions of Buena Vista Street and Cars Land opened to excited Guests as part of a major expansion at Disney California Adventure Park. Now, those popular areas will undergo a spectacular holiday makeover, meaning that The Happiest Place on Earth Just Got Merrier." - StichKingdom.com
It seems that Disneyland's sister park Disney California Adventure is beginning to come into its own. This past summer completed a Gazillion Dollar make-over, starting on Paradise Pier and ending with two new streets full of trolleys and race cars. The attendance numbers started shifting, and crowds that once packed the narrow walkways of Walt's original park suddenly shifted over to the wider corridors of the one time parking lot. So, it's not surprising that Disney is putting a lot of effort and money into making this newly popular park a rival for the title Merriest Place on Earth.

“For this first holiday celebration, we imagined that all the businesses on Buena Vista Street got together like a chamber of commerce to bring the community together,” explained David Caranci, Manager of Resort Enhancement. “It becomes a matter of civic pride to decorate the street and stores and to erect a huge, 50-foot-tall Christmas tree in the heart of the city as a spot for everyone to join in singing carols.  “Even Mickey and his friends will sport a retro look — how they appeared in the 1930s — to match the rest of the theming on Buena Vista Street. We’ll also have wonderful vintage toys for display under the huge Christmas tree. From a tin robot to a blimp — all sorts of hidden surprises from that time period.” - StichKingdom.com

It appears that Buena Vista Street will look just as jolly as Main Street.

Cars Land is celebrating its first Christmas season as well, in an enchanted creative partnership between Resort Enhancement, Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering. “We all came up with some very imaginative answers to the question, ‘How would cars celebrate the holiday season?’” said David.  Look for Snowy the Snow Car, a brand-new automotive holiday friend. He’s the Cars Land version of a snowman. “We have all fallen in love with him already because he is just so endearing,” said David. A nice photo next to this whimsical, seven-foot fellow might be just the thing to include with your holiday cards this year! - StichKingdom.com

Even the residents of Radiator Springs will be getting into the act.

I can hardly wait for all of the new holiday additions to Disney California Adventure.  Not only will Buena Vista Street and Cars Land be decorated but we will also be able to celebrate in Hollywood Land, a bug land and special surprises on Paradise Pier.  Apparently the "little sister" across the plaza has more up her sleeve, and is ready to show off her new holiday outfit.  I've got my cameras ready.

Disneyland and DCA for the holidays. Happy HoHoHolidays.

It's A World of laughter, a world of fun...

It's a Small World after all.

* * * * * * * * * *

One of the most beloved attractions, and catchiest songs can be found at the Happiest Place on Earth.  Originally created for the New York Worlds Fair, along with several other classic Disneyland attractions, "it's a small world" has become one of the most iconic attractions in the world. In addition to the original, sitting at the back of Fantasyland, this attraction has been repeated in every other Magic Kingdom park around the world. How's that for icon status? With easy to remember lyrics and a tune that will not get out of your brain it's easy to see why this water flume ride is so well loved.  Here in Anaheim it has even rated its very own Holiday overlay, complete with outdoor lighting and indoor decorations, which is just as popular and garners a long stand-by line which rivals any of the other E-ticket attractions in the park.

I hear the clock ticking down, so let's board for a trip around the world.

Disneyland History

Today in Disneyland History

17 years ago on this date - August 21, 1995 - Disneyland Park
closed one of the most missed attractions of all time.

Opened in 1967, The PeopleMover gave guests an elevated guided tour of Tomorrowland as they enjoyed sleek, streamlined comfort aboard one of 62 four-car trains. The 16 minute journey included a look inside several Tomorrowland attractions, with the trains pushed along quietly from below by pacer tires powered by an electric motor. The track was extended in 1977 to enter Space Mountain and the Superspeed Tunnel, which used wraparound screens to put riders in the middle of a high-speed auto race. After its closure, the PeopleMover track was converted into the high-speed Rocket Rods, which operated from 1998 to 2000.

info from Disney.com

*********************************

For many years now Disney fans have clamoured for the return of the PeopleMover.

Will it ever return? That seems to be a tricky question.
The former loading station still exists in the center of Tomorrowland.
The track itself is still present, in some form or fashion.
Rumor has it that the failed Rocket Rods damaged the track extensively.

Rumors still pop up about a return in some fashion.

The latest Disney news hints at a Major Update of Tomorrowland.
Part of that possible update could include the demolition of the current Innoventions building.
Disney fans remember this as the America Sings/Carousel of Progress building.
Another part of the possible updates include the space currently occupied by Autopia.
Could the old track, which runs through Innoventions and winds above Autopia, remain?
The Monorail also runs above Autopia, so this adds other questions.
Would PeopleMover track be removed and Monorail track stay?
Would both tracks be removed? Would both be re-routed?

It seems that we may have to wait some years to get any answers.
ImaginEars have a lot of ideas, and unlimited imaginations.
Unfortunately, Disney executives impose limitations and budgets.
So things move slowly and ideas change constantly.

That sounds a lot like the PeopleMover.

Muppet Vision 2 D

Muppet Vision

The Muppets are by far one of my favorite childhood & adulthood memories.  When the Disney Company acquired the right to use the Muppets I was beside myself. Two of my favorite things would be found together.  Alas, Disney has not used the merger to its full potential, but I still hold out hope that Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie and the rest of the crazy gang will have a more important role to play in the Resorts future.

In Honor of the Muppets here are a few videos to end the month on a happy note:

A Silly little bit that still makes me laugh.

A Quintessential Muppet Show Song

The Muppets do Disco ??

A Little "Classical" Muppets

And Finally - The Muppets ROCK

Next time your walking down Hollywood Blvd. toward the Tower of Terror, be sure to take a quick detour into the backlot area and visit the gang for a quick show.  In the summer heat remember that the theater is air conditioned.

Baroque Hoedown - Back on Main Street

It was 40 years ago (as of June 17th) that we first heard that familiar electrical sound.

The lights up and down Main Street USA were dimmed and then went out.

A hush fell over the crowd, as a bright blue glow came around the corner.

And then, in all majesty, comes the Blue Fairy right out of the Pinocchio movie.

To this day I cannot hear Baroque Hoedown without imagining that image.
Now, after almost 40 years, the magical lights, sounds, and motion of the
Electrical Parade return to Main Street.

The Main Street Electrical Parade
in miniature

and here we see "behind the scenes".

I hope you enjoyed the video. It really brought back great memories for me.
